ROTW – The Monkees – (I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone

Been a bit slack on the Record Of The Week front but I’ve had a pretty good excuse. This 1966 classic was released as a double A-side with “I’m a Believer”. I got my copy from me mate Dennis, along with a stack of Beatles singles and sixties gems, in return for some dog food. See, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know!

I first heard the track as a Sex Pistols cover, on the brilliant punk rock “We Do ‘Em Our Way” LP (That also included The Stranglers’ awesome and malevolent version of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk On By” and the Dickies’ high voltage cover of The Banana Splits Theme -recently used to great effect in the movie, “Kick Ass”….. check out the banana microphones in the video!).

The Pistols version is dark and brooding and expands on the teenage angst of the Monkees’ darkest moment. The Monkees as Punkees ……
