“I don’t want a holiday in the sun, I wanna go to the new Belsen”, Mr Rotten certainly had a way with words ….. some of them were even swear words! Taken from their only real album, ’77’s “Never Mind The Bollocks ….. Here’s The Sex Pistols” this was their last decent self-penned single. The Pistols caused a stir like no other band when they spewed on to the music scene in ’76, frightening old ladies and upsetting Tory Boys by questioning the relevance of the monarchy, government and jobs. Backed by possibly the first punk love song, “Satellite”, “Holidays” still packs the punch of old and upsets Mary Whitehouses everywhere. What a glorious noise!
I can remember real live punks being spotted in Perranporth in Easter of ’77 ….. imagine, punks in Cornwall! The Pistols even played a gig in Penzance in September ’77 (attended by almost as many people who went to Woodstock…..). I saw them on the telly, bought some flouro socks and drew a anarchy sign on my school bag.
Still confused after all these years, I thought bollocks were the knots on a monks rope belt and then discovered on Wikipedia that it’s slang term for testicles! Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?
