Apart from the inclusion in Libertines album names, brackets are under-used in song titles (I love brackets)…… unless you are Devo.
Devo were the bastard lovechild of a couple of blokes from Ohio called Gerald and Bob (proper rock names). Their art rock approach to music and “de-evolution” theory threw up some great tunes (many ahead of their time), some crazy costumes (the flowerpot hat only really caught on with Bill and Ben …… possibly also from Ohio) and some interesting questions (“Are we not men?”).
Their 1977 cover of the Jagger/Richards (whatever happened to those losers?) “Satisfaction” starts off sounding like it’s playing backwards and then slips into the wrong speed. It ends up being quite brilliant. Although Devo would never call themselves punks, this is the most “punk” record I own, it’s cover is ripped and torn having attended too many parties and the vinyl is snapped and mended with gaffer tape. It still plays beautifully, but the b-side, “SLOPPY (I saw my baby getting)” is there in name only!
